Peru has the second largest Amazonian territory after Brazil and is one of the areas with the greatest biodiversity and endemism on the planet. Although it is not the most populated area, it is the most diverse in anthropological terms, as 51 indigenous peoples out of the 55 recognized by the national government reside in this territory.

There are 38 registered protected natural areas in the Amazon, which represent 50% of the total of these nationally administered spaces. The protected natural areas of the Amazon cover 16 million hectares, meaning that 85% of the country’s protected areas are located in the Amazon.

It is estimated that 7,669.4 million tons of carbon are stored in the forests of the protected natural areas of the Amazon. More than 3 million hectares of indigenous territories overlap with these protected Amazonian areas.
